Design guidance

Bend radius

A bend that is too tight for the material cracks on the outside of the fold. As a starting point keep the internal radius at least equal to the sheet thickness, and more in harder alloys. A sharper corner requires review of an alternative construction, such as a welded joint.

Holes near bends

A hole too close to a fold distorts into an oval as the material stretches. Roughly two and a half times the material thickness plus the bend radius is a safe distance. If a hole has to sit near the bend, it is often better to cut it after folding.

Tool and torch access

A press brake needs room to bring the punch down without hitting a flange that has already been folded, and a welder needs to physically reach the joint. Deep narrow boxes and internal corners are where both of those fail, so the bend order belongs on the drawing where it matters.
