Distortion

Heat treatment can distort a part. The extent depends on geometry, section thickness and quench medium. Where finish grinding is required, machining stock is left on critical features before heat treatment.

Machining sequence

Most features cost less to machine before hardening, because cutting hardened steel is slow and hard on tooling. Anything that has to hold a close fit is usually better ground after. The operation sequence is reviewed for compatibility with the material and dimensional requirements.

Hardness specifications

A hardness figure without a location is ambiguous on any case-hardened part, because the surface and the core are deliberately different. Specify the value, the scale and where on the part it applies, and say whether case depth matters.

Heat-treatment quotations require a STEP, DXF or PDF drawing with material and required hardness specified.
