Design guidance

Minimum feature size

A hole smaller than the material thickness is difficult to cut cleanly, because the beam has to pierce and turn in a very short distance. As a rule of thumb keep holes and slots at least as wide as the sheet is thick, and wider in stainless than in mild steel.

Feature spacing

Two cuts close together put heat into the same small area twice, which distorts the material and can leave a rough edge. Keeping features roughly one material thickness apart avoids most of that, and it also stops thin webs from dropping into the machine.

Nesting and sheet use

Laser-cutting cost depends on cutting time and sheet consumption. Closely nested profiles reduce material waste. Changes to non-functional edges can improve nesting efficiency.
